The UTC consortium at University of Washington (PacTrans) will include the following schools: Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR; University of Alaska, Fairbanks in Fairbanks, AK; University of Idaho in Moscow, ID; and Washington State University in Pullman, WA. (Link)
Traffic Hero wins James J. Kell Competition Award

The University of Washington’s ITE proposal for “Traffic Hero”, written by Yegor and Runze, has been selected as the winner of this year’s James H. Kell RFP competition. The game will be featured at this year's Western ITE Conference in Anchorage, AK.

Runze Yu wins Western ITE Best Paper Award

Runze’s paper “Quantifying the Relationship between Near-Road Concentration of Black Carbon and Traffic Flow Observations” won the 2011 Western ITE Student Paper Award! It will be presented at this year's Western District ITE Conference in Anchorage, AK.

Dr. Hua Wang (front left) joins STAR Lab from the Harbin Institute of Technology. Dr. Wang is an expert in Electrical Engineering and will help STAR Lab continue it's sensor development. Tim Thomson (second left) has succesfully completed his Master's degree at teh University of Washington and will return to Rhode Island.

Dr. Lei Zhang visits STAR Lab

Prof. Lei Zhang from University of Maryland visited STAR Lab on Jan 4th. His research employs interdisciplinary modeling approaches to analyze the interdependencies between transportation, economic, and natural systems for efficient resource allocation and sustainable development in the transportation sector. He met with transportation faculty members including Prof. Yinhai Wang, Prof. Scott Rutherford, and Prof Cynthia Chen. Prof. Lei Zhang also gave a talk on his research topic: Agent-based Modeling and Simulation for Transportation.

Yao-Jan Wu graduates

Yao-Jan succesfully defends his dissertation, entitled "Traffic Sensor Data-Based Arterial Performance Measurement: Methodology and Online Implementation". Yao goes on to a post-doctoral position at the University of Virginia. Congrats Dr. Wu!
Dr. Yang visits STAR Lab

Dr. Yang from Tongji University in Shanghai visits STAR Lab, presenting a wide array of current and upcoming research happening in Tongji. The Lab also hosted Dr. Yang for dinner in Shoreline.

STAR Lab Participates in the Livable Streets Workshop

STAR Lab students showed their research to the general public during the Children's Hospital Livable Streets Workshop, hosted at the University of Washington. Students demonstrated technologies that facilitate non-motorized data collection, as well optimize exisiting street systems to reduce the need for additional construction and improve safety.

STAR Lab gets a record 14 papers accepted for presentation at this year's Transportation Research Board meeting. Ten students will be heading over to Washington DC this January to present their work!

STAR Lab welcomed Dr. Yafeng Yin and Dr. Yi Zhang over the course of the summer. Dr. Yin presented a signal timing approach that considered environmental costs, while Dr. Zhang demonstrated an approach to model and cluster urban traffic data.

STAR Lab NATMEC Tour

STAR Lab hosted visitors from the NATMEC conference with a full tour of the lab. The particpants were given an overview of the facilities as well as a brief introduction to six data collection technologies presently in development. Demos included live demonstrations of Bluetooth and video technologies as well as an overview of ALEDA and DriveNet systems.

STAR Lab cleans up at the ITE Student Night

STAR Lab members Jon Corey, Tim Thomson and Yunteng Lao, tied for fist place at the Student Night Competition, in which over 6 teams participated. Furthermore, STAR Lab intern Aaron Knight has recieved the ITE Outstanding Undergraduate Award.

Congrats to Xiaolei and Jonathan!

Xiaolei Ma and Jonathan Corey of STAR Lab have succesfully defended their Master's theses. The work, entiled "Developing a GPS-based On-line Freight Performance Measure Platform" and "Detection and Correction of Loop Detector Sensitivity Level Errors" respectively, was conducted as part of research done at STAR Lab.
VVDC wins Runner Up at Student Technology Showcase

Yegor Malinovskiy along with Dr. Wang entered the Science and Engineering Business Association Technology Showcase and were awarded second place. The competition evaluated the business potential of over 15 various research projects happening at the University of Washington.
Yegor receives Michael Kyte Award

Yegor Malinovskiy was awarded the Region X Student of the Year, named in honor of Michael Kyte, retired Director of NIATT at the University of Idaho, and his dedication to the creation of the Region X Transportation Consortium.
Guohui wins 3rd place from PTV America

STAR Lab alumnus Guohui Zhang's HOT Lane Simulation method received the 3rd Place Award from PTV America. This method was a direct result from the TransNow dynamic tolling project and his WSDOT intern work under the supervision of Shuming Yan
